The symptoms we chase every week

The boat will not crank, but the battery is good

The usual suspects in order: corroded battery terminals, a failing ground cable to the engine block, a bad battery switch, or a dead starter solenoid circuit. A voltage-drop test walks the path in minutes and points at the exact connection. This is the most common ramp emergency we run, and the fix is usually cables or connections in the $150 to $300 range, not a starter.

The battery keeps dying between trips

Almost always a parasitic drain: a memory circuit, a sticky bilge float, an amplifier that never sleeps, or a slow short from chafed wire. We measure the draw with an ammeter, pull circuits one at a time until it drops, and fix the guilty one. Replacing the battery without finding the drain just schedules the next dead morning.

Gauges are dead or reading nonsense

The gauge head is the least likely culprit. Most gauge faults live in the harness connector behind the helm, a lost ground, or the sender on the engine or in the tank. Fuel gauges especially: the tank sender wears its resistive track and starts lying long before it dies. Tracing runs $150 to $400 off the published menu.

The trolling motor cuts out or the graph reboots

Modern electronics pull serious current, and old or undersized wiring browns out under load, which looks exactly like defective equipment. Wire gauge, connection quality, and breaker condition get checked first, because correct wire fixes more electronics complaints than warranty claims do.

A breaker trips or a fuse keeps blowing

A breaker that trips is telling the truth: something on that circuit is drawing too much, usually chafed insulation grounding out or a seized pump motor. The wrong fix is a bigger fuse, which converts a nuisance into a fire risk. We find the fault, repair the wire or the device, and keep the protection sized right.

Lights, horn, or accessories dead on one side of the boat

Shared-ground failures make whole sections of a boat go dark at once. Pontoons are famous for it because their fuse blocks and ground buses live in the weather. Cleaning, sealing, and re-terminating the distribution typically lands at $150 to $350 and cures a whole list of symptoms in one visit.

Why meter-first beats parts-first

Electrical faults hide, and parts stores love a guesser. The parts-cannon approach, new battery, new starter, new pump, treats every symptom as a component when most marine faults are connections: corrosion, vibration-loosened terminals, and chafed wire. Why does my boat crank slow even with a new battery?

Slow cranking with a healthy battery is a resistance problem: corroded terminals, a failing ground strap, or cables that have corroded inside their insulation. A voltage-drop test finds the bad link in minutes. The repair is usually cables and terminals in the $150 to $300 range rather than a starter or another battery.

What drains a boat battery when everything is off?

Some draw is normal (radio memory, clocks), but a battery that dies in days has a parasitic drain: a stuck bilge float switch, an accessory wired always-hot, or chafed wire leaking to ground. We measure the current with everything off and isolate circuits until the meter drops, then fix the one that moved it.

Are electrical problems really a fire risk on boats?

Yes. Electrical faults are consistently among the leading causes of boat fires in US Coast Guard accident statistics, usually from chafed wiring, overloaded circuits, or oversized fuses hiding a fault.
